OSHA’s Permit-Required Confined Space standard is intended to protect workers from toxic, explosive, or asphyxiating atmospheres; when working in manholes, crawl spaces, and tanks.  These spaces are not designed for continuous occupancy and are difficult to exit in the event of an emergency.  Employers are required to identify each permit-required confined space in their workplace, prevent unauthorized entry into these spaces, and protect entrants that enter the space.  This program will provide you with an understanding of permit-required confined spaces, identification of the hazards associated with working in these spaces, the responsibilities of the people involved with confined space work, and the requirements for confined space rescue.

This program will include information on the OSHA standard as well as give participants resources they can use to conduct training for their employees.

What we will cover:

  • Review the OSHA confined space for construction standard
  • Explain and identify confined spaces
  • Understand the roles of the host employer, controlling contractor and entry employer
  • Identify hazards and control methods associated with work performed in confined spaces
  • Discuss and review confined space entry permits
  • Describe confined space communications methods
  • Discuss atmospheric monitoring needed during confined space entry operations
  • Review the responsibilities of the confined space entrant, attendant and supervisor and the training required for each
  • Describe and understand the requirements for personnel rescue procedure, especially for non-entry rescue and retrieval
  • Identify components needed for a written program
