Safety Committee Workshop (9:00 am to 11:30 am)

A workplace safety committee can encourage employees to participate in implementing and monitoring the company’s safety program. A properly functioning safety committee can set up a structured method for employers to gather and evaluate employee feedback on ways to improve, or change existing policies and engage in the successful implementation of new policies. Often times, a safety committee is formed and after a short while, the enthusiasm of being on the committee dwindles, and instead of being a force for positive safety improvement, the committee does not provide the change hoped for.

This workshop will review considerations for setting up a committee, guidelines for how the committee should function, and how to get results. Participants will receive handout material they can use to help establish or reinvigorate their safety committee.

What we will cover:
• Selecting members of the safety committee
• Determining the roles, responsibilities and limitations of the safety committee
• Setting safety committee goals and annual reviews of the committee
• Conducting safety committee meetings and tracking items
• Specific activities:
o Workplace inspections or review of inspection reports
o Accident investigations and / or review
o Safety policy or safety rule review
• Management involvement

OSHA Walking and Working Surfaces (12:00 pm to 2:30 pm)

Falls from heights and on the same level are among the leading causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. OSHA recently issued an updated standard on walking-working surfaces and personal fall protection systems to better protect workers in general industry from these hazards. These updated rules were intended to clarify standards, training requirements, and inspection requirements, however, employers still have questions about the standard and compliance.

This program will review the standard and discuss compliance options and considerations. Updates to the general industry standards including slip, trip, and fall hazards and changes to the requirements for personal fall protection systems will also be discussed.

What we will cover:
• Overview of the Standard
• Options for protecting workers from falls
• Working surface conditions, floor loading, access and egress
• Training and inspection requirements
• General compliance considerations
